Building an ongoing consulting relationship

Project Description/Issue

The client is a mid-tier global E&P company, with a valuable production-sharing agreement for production from a large, complex offshore asset in the Middle East. In response to pressure from the national regulator, the client had a need to define requirements for a local Document Solution. Flare proposed a six week on-site project that would cover all business functions.

Flare’s Approach

Flare focused the requirements gathering exercise on detailed interviews with each key business function in the client’s organisation. Flare deployed a senior consultant, with substantial E&P & IM experience. As a consequence, the project established strong relationships with business partners at all levels in each department.


The project delivered a comprehensive requirements analysis that combined effective IM functional needs with a detailed grasp of key business functions. Local IM management fed the project deliverables into the client’s headquarters IM team for broader review. Consequently, the specification was taken up as a model for delivery of a global document management solution. Delivery of the project was completed under budget and ahead of schedule. The successful project outcome established Flare’s relationship as a “trusted advisor” on Information Management issues. This led to development of a longer term relationship, with successful delivery of projects by a range of Flare consultants, including:

  • Definition and implementation of a Records Management Policy;
  • Design and development of a custom taxonomy for physical item management;
  • Analysis, design and implementation of the restructuring of shared document storage following a major organisational structure change.
